Dragon Boat Festival Celebrations in Xiamen
2024-06-06
The annual Dragon Boat Festival was celebrated with great enthusiasm in Xiamen on June 6th, 2024. The festival, which falls on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month, is one of the most important traditional festivals in China.
In Xiamen, the festival was marked by a series of colorful activities. One of the highlights was the dragon boat races, where teams of paddlers competed vigorously in their elaborately decorated boats. The races attracted large crowds of spectators who cheered on the teams.
Another traditional activity was the making and eating of zongzi, a pyramid-shaped dumpling made of glutinous rice and wrapped in bamboo leaves. Many families and restaurants in Xiamen prepared zongzi, adding to the festive atmosphere.
In addition to these activities, people also hung calamus and wormwood above their doorways, wore herbal sachets, and drank realgar wine to ward off evil spirits and diseases. These customs have been passed down for generations and are still widely practiced today.
The Dragon Boat Festival not only showcases the rich cultural heritage of Xiamen but also brings people together in a spirit of celebration and unity. It is a time for families and friends to come together, enjoy the festivities, and look forward to a prosperous year ahead.
